Designing a Life We Love. Fostering Growth as a Career Women and Mother of 2. First Day of School 2024

“If I could keep you little, I would keep you close to me, but then I would miss you growing into who you are meant to be. One of my favorite books from Marianne Richmond describes best the feelings I experience during the first day of school 2024.

This day is full of mixed feelings for me! I’m often focused on creating spaces that nurture growth, inspire imagination, and provide comfort. But today, as a mother, I find myself reflecting on a different kind of growth—the kind that happens right before my eyes, as I watch my children grow so fast!

Today, my little ones, who once fit snugly in my arms, are now stepping into Preschool and Kindergarten. It’s a day full of mixed feelings: pride, excitement, and a touch of sadness for me. One of the hardest parts of being a mother is watching how fast they grow. Some days seem endless, yet the years slip by so fast.

I still remember the day they were born, their tiny hands grasping my fingers, and now, here they are, ready to embark on their own adventures. As I think about how quickly time is slipping through my fingers, I remind myself of a few important truths:

  1. The older they get, it’s not about me being ready anymore, it is more about what they need and if THEY are ready: As much as I want to keep them close, it’s their time to explore, learn, and grow. It’s not about whether I’m ready to let go, but about giving them the space they need to spread their wings.

  2. We are growing together: As they take their steps into the world, I’m growing too. Parenthood is a journey we’re on together, and every milestone they reach helps me grow into the parent I want to be, the parent they need me to be and frankly a much better focus career women and designer.

  3. They are thriving, and so am I: I often remind myself that they’re having an amazing time at an amazing forest school, making great friends and learning new things in the best environment possible (nature). Meanwhile, I continue my career serving the children that need it the most (designing for pediatric spaces), learning environments and residential, knowing that I’m setting an example for them about the importance of following your passion and intertwining work with family the best way possible I know.

This day is a reminder that while I may wish to keep them little forever, there’s beauty in watching them grow into who they are meant to be. And as they do, I’m right there with them, growing, learning, cheering for them and cherishing every moment.
